Psychometrics

What psychometrics is—measurement theory for tests and surveys—and the four questions it answers for any assessment.

Home›Glossary›Psychometrics

Psychometrics is the engineering of measurement for things you can't hold: knowledge, attitudes, readiness. It answers four questions for any instrument: is it consistent (reliability), on-target (validity), fair across groups (equity) and useful for decisions (utility).

🧮 Formula

—

✏️ Worked example

Every scored FormLM assessment inherits the same checklist: item quality, reliability, validity evidence, and a report that states what the score does and doesn't mean.

🎯 When to use it

Any time a number attached to a person will drive a decision—hire, coach, promote, intervene—psychometrics is the referee.

⚠️ Watch out

The discipline is a checklist, not a brand. "Scientifically designed" without reliability/validity numbers is decoration.

Questions practitioners ask

Do I need psychometrics for a workshop survey?

For internal feedback—light-touch (good items, clear scales) is fine. The moment scores rank people, the full checklist applies.

Is psychometrics only for personality tests?

No—it governs exams, readiness checks, engagement surveys, 360s: anything converting behavior into numbers.
